Judges 13-16 Samson For May 4, 2010

1Once again the Israelites started disobeying the LORD. So he let the Philistines take control of Israel for forty years. 2Manoah from the tribe of Dan lived in the town of Zorah. His wife was not able to have children, 3-5but one day an angel from the LORD appeared to her and said: You have never been able to have any children, but very soon you will be pregnant and have a son. He will belong to God belong to God: The Hebrew text has "be a Nazirite of God." Nazirites were dedicated to God and had to from the day he is born, so his hair must never be cut. And even before he is born, you must not drink any wine or beer or eat any food forbidden by God's laws. Your son will begin to set Israel free from the Philistines. 6She went to Manoah and (told him).

24Later, Manoah's wife did give birth to a son, and she named him Samson. As the boy grew, the LORD blessed him. 25Then, while Samson was staying at Dan's Camp [c] between the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol, the Spirit of the LORD took control of him.

Judges 14

5As Samson and his parents reached the vineyards near Timnah, a fierce young lion suddenly roared and attacked Samson. 6But the LORD's Spirit took control of Samson, and with his bare hands he tore the lion apart, as though it had been a young goat.

Judges 16 Delilah Tricks Samson

4Some time later, Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah, who lived in Sorek Valley. 5The Philistine rulers [y] went to Delilah and said, " Trick Samson into telling you what makes him so strong and what can make him weak. Then we can tie him up so he can't get away. If you find out his secret, we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver." [z] 6The next time Samson was at Delilah's house, she asked, " Samson, what makes you so strong? How can I tie you up so you can't get away? Come on, you can tell me." 7Samson answered, " If someone ties me up with seven new bowstrings that have never been dried, [aa] it will make me just as weak as anyone else."

8-9The Philistine rulers gave seven new bowstrings to Delilah. They also told some of their soldiers to go to Delilah's house and hide in the room where Samson and Delilah were. If the bowstrings made Samson weak, they would be able to capture him. Delilah tied up Samson with the bowstrings and shouted, " Samson, the Philistines are attacking!" Samson snapped the bowstrings, as though they were pieces of scorched string. The Philistines had not found out why Samson was so strong.

10" You lied and made me look like a fool," Delilah said. " Now tell me. How can I really tie you up?" 11Samson answered, " Use some new ropes. If I'm tied up with ropes that have never been used, I'll be just as weak as anyone else." 12Delilah got new ropes and again had some Philistines hide in the room. Then she tied up Samson's arms and shouted, " Samson, the Philistines are attacking!" Samson snapped the ropes as if they were threads.

13" You're still lying and making a fool of me," Delilah said. " Tell me how I can tie you up!" " My hair is in seven braids," Samson replied. " If you weave my braids into the threads on a loom and nail the loom [ab] to a wall, then I will be as weak as anyone else."

14While Samson was asleep, Delilah wove his braids into the threads on a loom and nailed the loom to a wall. [ac] Then she shouted, " Samson, the Philistines are attacking !" Samson woke up and pulled the loom free from its posts in the ground and from the nails in the wall. Then he pulled his hair free from the woven cloth.

15" Samson," Delilah said, " you claim to love me, but you don't mean it! You've made me look like a fool three times now, and you still haven't told me why you are so strong." 16Delilah started nagging and pestering him day after day, until he couldn't stand it any longer.

17Finally, Samson told her the truth. " I have belonged to God [ad] ever since I was born, so my hair has never been cut. If it were ever cut off, my strength would leave me, and I would be as weak as anyone else." 18Delilah realized that he was telling the truth. So she sent someone to tell the Philistine rulers, " Come to my house one more time. Samson has finally told me the truth."

The Philistine rulers went to Delilah's house, and they brought along the silver they had promised her. 19Delilah had lulled Samson to sleep with his head resting in her lap. She signaled to one of the Philistine men as she began cutting off Samson's seven braids. And by the time she was finished, Samson's strength was gone. Delilah tied him up 20and shouted, " Samson, the Philistines are attacking!"

Samson woke up and thought, " I'll break loose and escape, just as I always do." He did not realize that the LORD had stopped helping him. 21The Philistines grabbed Samson and poked out his eyes. They took him to the prison in Gaza and chained him up. Then they put him to work, turning a millstone to grind grain.

22But they didn't cut his hair any more, so it started growing back. 23The Philistine rulers threw a big party and sacrificed a lot of animals to their god Dagon. The rulers said: Samson was our enemy, but our god Dagon helped us capture him! 24-25Everyone there was having a good time, and they shouted, " Bring out Samson--he's still good for a few more laughs!"

The rulers had Samson brought from the prison, and when the people saw him, this is how they praised their god: Samson ruined our crops and killed our people. He was our enemy, but our god helped us capture him. They made fun of Samson for a while, then they told him to stand near the columns that supported the roof. 26A young man was leading Samson by the hand, and Samson said to him, " I need to lean against something. Take me over to the columns that hold up the roof." 27The Philistine rulers were celebrating in a temple packed with people and with three thousand [ae] more on the flat roof. They had all been watching Samson and making fun of him. [af]

28Samson prayed, " Please remember me, LORD God. The Philistines poked out my eyes, but make me strong one last time, so I can take revenge for at least one of my eyes!" [ag] 29Samson was standing between the two middle columns that held up the roof. He felt around and found one column with his right hand, and the other with his left hand.

30Then he shouted, " Let me die with the Philistines!" He pushed against the columns as hard as he could, and the temple collapsed with the Philistine rulers and everyone else still inside. Samson killed more Philistines when he died than he had killed during his entire life. 31b Samson was a leader [ai] of Israel for twenty years.

1 以 色 列 人 又 行 耶 和 華 眼 中 看 為 惡 的 事 ， 耶 和 華 將 他 們 交 在 非 利 士 人 手 中 四 十 年 。 2 那 時 ， 有 一 個 瑣 拉 人 ， 是 屬 但 族 的 ， 名 叫 瑪 挪 亞 。 他 的 妻 不 懷 孕 ， 不 生 育 。 3 耶 和 華 的 使 者 向 那 婦 人 顯 現 ， 對 他 說 ： 向 來 你 不 懷 孕 ， 不 生 育 ， 如 今 你 必 懷 孕 生 一 個 兒 子 。 4 所 以 你 當 謹 慎 ， 清 酒 濃 酒 都 不 可 喝 ， 一 切 不 潔 之 物 也 不 可 吃 。 5 你 必 懷 孕 生 一 個 兒 子 ， 不 可 用 剃 頭 刀 剃 他 的 頭 ， 因 為 這 孩 子 一 出 胎 就 歸 　 神 作 拿 細 耳 人 。 他 必 起 首 拯 救 以 色 列 人 脫 離 非 利 士 人 的 手 。 6 婦 人 就 回 去 對 丈 夫 說 24 後 來 婦 人 生 了 一 個 兒 子 ， 給 他 起 名 叫 參 孫 。 孩 子 長 大 ， 耶 和 華 賜 福 與 他 。 25 在 瑪 哈 尼 但 ， 就 是 瑣 拉 和 以 實 陶 中 間 ， 耶 和 華 的 靈 才 感 動 他 。

士 師 記 14 5 參 孫 跟 他 父 母 下 亭 拿 去 ， 到 了 亭 拿 的 葡 萄 園 ， 見 有 一 隻 少 壯 獅 子 向 他 吼 叫 。 6 耶 和 華 的 靈 大 大 感 動 參 孫 ， 他 雖 然 手 無 器 械 ， 卻 將 獅 子 撕 裂 ， 如 同 撕 裂 山 羊 羔 一 樣 。 他 行 這 事 並 沒 有 告 訴 父 母 。

士 師 記 16 4 後 來 ， 參 孫 在 梭 烈 谷 喜 愛 一 個 婦 人 ， 名 叫 大 利 拉 。 5 非 利 士 人 的 首 領 上 去 見 那 婦 人 ， 對 他 說 ： 求 你 誆 哄 參 孫 ， 探 探 他 因 何 有 這 麼 大 的 力 氣 ， 我 們 用 何 法 能 勝 他 ， 捆 綁 剋 制 他 。 我 們 就 每 人 給 你 一 千 一 百 舍 客 勒 銀 子 。 6 大 利 拉 對 參 孫 說 ： 求 你 告 訴 我 ， 你 因 何 有 這 麼 大 的 力 氣 ， 當 用 何 法 捆 綁 剋 制 你 。 7 參 孫 回 答 說 ： 人 若 用 七 條 未 乾 的 青 繩 子 捆 綁 我 ， 我 就 軟 弱 像 別 人 一 樣 。 8 於 是 非 利 士 人 的 首 領 拿 了 七 條 未 乾 的 青 繩 子 來 ， 交 給 婦 人 ， 他 就 用 繩 子 捆 綁 參 孫 。 9 有 人 預 先 埋 伏 在 婦 人 的 內 室 裡 。 婦 人 說 ： 參 孫 哪 ， 非 利 士 人 拿 你 來 了 ！ 參 孫 就 掙 斷 繩 子 ， 如 掙 斷 經 火 的 麻 線 一 般 。 這 樣 ， 他 力 氣 的 根 由 人 還 是 不 知 道 。 10 大 利 拉 對 參 孫 說 ： 你 欺 哄 我 ， 向 我 說 謊 言 。 現 在 求 你 告 訴 我 當 用 何 法 捆 綁 你 。 11 參 孫 回 答 說 ： 人 若 用 沒 有 使 過 的 新 繩 捆 綁 我 ， 我 就 軟 弱 像 別 人 一 樣 。 12 大 利 拉 就 用 新 繩 捆 綁 他 ， 對 他 說 ： 參 孫 哪 ， 非 利 士 人 拿 你 來 了 ！ 有 人 預 先 埋 伏 在 內 室 裡 。 參 孫 將 臂 上 的 繩 掙 斷 了 ， 如 掙 斷 一 條 線 一 樣 。 13 大 利 拉 對 參 孫 說 ： 你 到 如 今 還 是 欺 哄 我 ， 向 我 說 謊 言 。 求 你 告 訴 我 ， 當 用 何 法 捆 綁 你 。 參 孫 回 答 說 ： 你 若 將 我 頭 上 的 七 條 髮 綹 ， 與 緯 線 同 織 就 可 以 了 。 14 於 是 大 利 拉 將 他 的 髮 綹 與 緯 線 同 織 ， 用 橛 子 釘 住 ， 對 他 說 ： 參 孫 哪 ， 非 利 士 人 拿 你 來 了 ！ 參 孫 從 睡 中 醒 來 ， 將 機 上 的 橛 子 和 緯 線 一 齊 都 拔 出 來 了 。 15 大 利 拉 對 參 孫 說 ： 你 既 不 與 我 同 心 ， 怎 麼 說 你 愛 我 呢 ？ 你 這 三 次 欺 哄 我 ， 沒 有 告 訴 我 ， 你 因 何 有 這 麼 大 的 力 氣 。 16 大 利 拉 天 天 用 話 催 逼 他 ， 甚 至 他 心 裡 煩 悶 要 死 。 17 參 孫 就 把 心 中 所 藏 的 都 告 訴 了 他 ， 對 他 說 ： 向 來 人 沒 有 用 剃 頭 刀 剃 我 的 頭 ， 因 為 我 自 出 母 胎 就 歸 　 神 作 拿 細 耳 人 ； 若 剃 了 我 的 頭 髮 ， 我 的 力 氣 就 離 開 我 ， 我 便 軟 弱 像 別 人 一 樣 。 18 大 利 拉 見 他 把 心 中 所 藏 的 都 告 訴 了 他 ， 就 打 發 人 到 非 利 士 人 的 首 領 那 裡 ， 對 他 們 說 ： 他 已 經 把 心 中 所 藏 的 都 告 訴 了 我 ， 請 你 們 再 上 來 一 次 。 於 是 非 利 士 人 的 首 領 手 裡 拿 著 銀 子 ， 上 到 婦 人 那 裡 。 19 大 利 拉 使 參 孫 枕 著 他 的 膝 睡 覺 ， 叫 了 一 個 人 來 剃 除 他 頭 上 的 七 條 髮 綹 。 於 是 大 利 拉 剋 制 他 ， 他 的 力 氣 就 離 開 他 了 。 20 大 利 拉 說 ： 參 孫 哪 ， 非 利 士 人 拿 你 來 了 ！ 參 孫 從 睡 中 醒 來 ， 心 裡 說 ： 我 要 像 前 幾 次 出 去 活 動 身 體 ； 他 卻 不 知 道 耶 和 華 已 經 離 開 他 了 。 21 非 利 士 人 將 他 拿 住 ， 剜 了 他 的 眼 睛 ， 帶 他 下 到 迦 薩 ， 用 銅 鍊 拘 索 他 ； 他 就 在 監 裡 推 磨 。 22 然 而 他 的 頭 髮 被 剃 之 後 ， 又 漸 漸 長 起 來 了 。 23 非 利 士 人 的 首 領 聚 集 ， 要 給 他 們 的 神 大 袞 獻 大 祭 ， 並 且 歡 樂 ， 因 為 他 們 說 ： 我 們 的 　 神 將 我 們 的 仇 敵 參 孫 交 在 我 們 手 中 了 。 24 眾 人 看 見 參 孫 ， 就 讚 美 他 們 的 　 神 說 ： 我 們 的 　 神 將 毀 壞 我 們 地 、 殺 害 我 們 許 多 人 的 仇 敵 交 在 我 們 手 中 了 。 25 他 們 正 宴 樂 的 時 候 ， 就 說 ： 叫 參 孫 來 ， 在 我 們 面 前 戲 耍 戲 耍 。 於 是 將 參 孫 從 監 裡 提 出 來 ， 他 就 在 眾 人 面 前 戲 耍 。 他 們 使 他 站 在 兩 柱 中 間 。 26 參 孫 向 拉 他 手 的 童 子 說 ： 求 你 讓 我 摸 著 托 房 的 柱 子 ， 我 要 靠 一 靠 。 27 那 時 房 內 充 滿 男 女 ， 非 利 士 人 的 眾 首 領 也 都 在 那 裡 。 房 的 平 頂 上 約 有 三 千 男 女 觀 看 參 孫 戲 耍 。 28 參 孫 求 告 耶 和 華 說 ： 主 耶 和 華 啊 ， 求 你 眷 念 我 。 神 啊 ， 求 你 賜 我 這 一 次 的 力 量 ， 使 我 在 非 利 士 人 身 上 報 那 剜 我 雙 眼 的 仇 。 29 參 孫 就 抱 住 托 房 的 那 兩 根 柱 子 ： 左 手 抱 一 根 ， 右 手 抱 一 根 ， 30 說 ： 我 情 願 與 非 利 士 人 同 死 ！ 就 盡 力 屈 身 ， 房 子 倒 塌 ， 壓 住 首 領 和 房 內 的 眾 人 。 這 樣 ， 參 孫 死 時 所 殺 的 人 比 活 著 所 殺 的 還 多 。 31b參 孫 作 以 色 列 的 士 師 二 十 年 。
